As one of the problems with the Rootes engine is oil leakage from the crankpulley area, I'd read about a mod to fit a modern oil seal so decided to have a go. First a seal was sourced with 44.5mm bore. Then a ring was rolled & welded & an end cap cut to suit, then cut to clear the sfaft.

Next the timing cover was part blasted, marked out and chain drilled. This was then ground to fit the seal housing.

When I was happy with the fit it was TIG welded. To be sure all was ok the area was crack tested with red dye & can be seen in the last pic none showed through

As you can see the pulley hasn't got any oil return groove,so has a good ground diameter for the seal run on.

A coat of black paint, fit the seal &installthe pulley - job done!!

Heres a comment from a guy who fitted one- "

Hi Dave
Parts fitted and no more oil leak. Thanks. When I took the old bits off I found that  the oil thrower grooves on the old pulley were badly chewed up, so was not working as it should, hence the oil leak problem. The new oil seal is a much better idea.
